Robert Bissell was born in Somerset, England where he grew up on a farm, where animals, Celtic Legends, and panoramic landscapes were part of his daily life. He studied at the Manchester Art College and the Royal College of Art in London. After studying Graphic design and getting his Master in the Royal College of Art in London, he moved to America and began his successful career in retail advertising. After 15 years, he decided to devote his time to painting and sculpting. His paintings are realistic landscapes in oil-based on his own photography. Some ideas that his work explores is the world of animals being a mirror for human existence, self-definition, and self-reflection. The animal characters make us consider our own condition and place in nature.

Robert Bissel works a lot with realistic imagery that involves bright or dark colors that resemble the details in his paintings. Most of his artwork is based on photographs in which he takes or his friends take that gives him the idea to bring his ideas with the photograph together in his paintings.
